NCIS: Sydney gets renewed for season 2 at CBS. The Australian police procedural series, following Special Agent-in-Charge Michelle Mackey (Olivia Swann), left audiences on a major cliffhanger at the end of season 1. The season finale saw the mysterious Ana Niemus (Georgina Haig) finally in NCIS custody, only to be released by JD (Todd Lasance), who discovers her connection to Colonel Rankin (Lewis Fitz-Gerald). While the NCIS franchise continues to expand, Sydney’s future was left up in the air following the finale, which aired in January.
Now, Variety confirms that NCIS: Sydney will be back for season 2 at CBS and Paramount+. The news comes as little surprise considering the success of season 1, which was a strong performer on both cable and streaming. As the latest spin-off in the NCIS franchise, the main cast is expected to return, but potential new characters could also join for season 2. Showrunner Morgan O’Neill said in a statement:
“We’re beyond stoked with the response to the first season of the show, both in Australia and around the world, and that the team at ‘NCIS: Sydney’ is returning for a second season. We’re especially thrilled to invite our audience deeper into the lives of our core team, peeling back the layers to find out what really makes them tick. This will be even more important as we see the bonds of the new family tested to breaking point in the face of a much more potent enemy looming on the horizon.”
What To Expect From NCIS: Sydney Season 2
The final episode of NCIS: Sydney season 1 left major questions and set up a future storyline to be explored in season 2: the connection between Ana and Colonel Rankin, and his potential involvement in the overarching story. In the finale, Ana is in NCIS custody, but when JD’s son is kidnapped from his birthday party by a clown, the officer must turn over Ana. At the last minute, the clown reveals his plan to kill JD instead. However, Ana kills the clown herself, then shows his phone to JD; the only number on it belongs to Colonel Rankin.
NCIS: Sydney season 2 must address this mysterious alliance with Ana, who has been terrorizing American agents overseas. Rankin’s involvement will likely lead to a major confrontation with the NCIS team, as he could now be one of their biggest threats and enemies. The betrayal also indicates that Ana’s story could just be getting started, as she is more involved in the action now than viewers were led to believe.
Rankin’s revelation will likely shake up the cast, possibly leading to new characters being introduced. It also means Mackey is in potential danger, as she is seen confronting Rankin during the episode’s final minutes. With confirmation that NCIS: Sydney season 2 is on the way, hopefully more news regarding filming and cast updates will follow soon, and audiences will have a better idea of when they can expect the drama to return.
